From Layered MOFs to Structuring at the Meso?/Macroscopic Scale
Focusing on applications in separation, adsorption and catalysis, this handbook underlines the importance of this hot and exciting topic. It provides an excellent insight into the synthesis and modification of MOFs, their synthesis on an industrial scale, their use as CO2 and chemical warfare adsorbers, and the role of defects in catalysis. In addition, the authors treat such new aspects as biocatalysis and applications in photocatalysis and optoelectronic devices.Focusing on applications in separation, adsorption and catalysis, this handbook underlines the importance of this hot and exciting topic. Summary The rational combination of predesigned molecules has recently been considered as a promising alternative to create novel 2D polymers that are still dominated by graphene and closely related materials such as boron nitride, transition metal sulfides, and oxides. In this regard, an alternative approach is based on the production of laminar structures combining organic–inorganic molecules with metal ions/fragments to generate metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). In this chapter we will illustrate with selected samples the current state of the art in the field of synthetic 2D polymers based on MOFs and some nonporous coordination polymers, showing different approaches based on the rational use of the coordination chemistry to combine metal ions/metal fragments with organic–inorganic ligands. We will summarize the essential concepts and the preparation strategies. Additionally we will show a summary of the seminal results in the studies of properties of these 2D materials at the nanoscale and some personal perspectives of their promising potential applications.
